Our Program
Through our internship program, we welcome current students and recent graduates to join our team in 3-4 month paid positions. ADL interns gain hands-on experience, a connection to a network of top industry leaders and entrepreneurs, and an unparalleled opportunity to kickstart their careers by creating meaningful change in energy, buildings, and smart cities. Juniors at ADL not only work on big picture strategy but also get immersed in ADL’s “do tank” by launching and nurturing new ventures.
ADL interns have gone on to highly competitive and stimulating roles internally or in other companies in cleantech, consulting, finance, technology, venture capital such as BlackRock, McKinsey & Company, PwC, BCG, Amazon, EY, Turner & Townsend, etc.
Who We Are & Why ADL
ADL Ventures is a group of entrepreneurs and technology commercialization experts focused on developing and deploying new clean energy technologies and services in collaboration with major infrastructure players. Sectors of focus include building technologies, power / utilities innovation, and smart cities / transportation. Major clients include leading companies in sectors such as building materials, chemicals, and energy such as PG&E and Sto Corp, as well as high-growth venture-backed companies. ADL is also a key technology scaling partner of the US Department of Energy, helping lead programs such as the Advanced Building Construction Collaborative and the American Made Challenges.

Qinyi Ma
Analyst (Energy and Utilities)
I worked at a smart-light company as their marketing intern and learned how to build and execute a marketing strategy. Before that, I was part of a startup that created affordable and sustainable air filters for low-income countries. I contributed by conducting market analysis, pitching to green-tech investors, and mentoring Nepali and Chinese students in environmental science.
I worked on a variety, but my favorites were NREL-Perovskite, SBIR and TCR.
The fun and tight-knit work culture.
That it is a skill to balance between lateral and horizontal thinking and to be able to dive into the details of a project without losing sight of the bigger picture.

My favorite part about being with ADL was having the opportunity to expand my knowledge of new innovations, policy creations, and projects in the buildings and energy verticals. I loved learning about new technologies and how ADL was working with others to develop extremely creative solutions. This experience gave me great insight to the future of both buildings and energy industries in the U.S. and across the world. I also had the great opportunity of enhancing my business skills by learning how ADL operates. I interacted with stakeholders on projects, engaged with leaders for potential conference targets in 2023, and took notes on really interesting brainstorming workshops. Working with a variety of the ADL staff was really cool because I learned of their roles and they all taught me so much!
While working at ADL, I improved my outreach and professional language skills when sending out important conference outreach emails. I also improved my research and writing skills through weekly buildings content posting. I learned how to navigate relevant articles in the buildings industry and write effective content for LinkedIn. I continued my research and writing skills while drafting my buildings post for ADL’s website. I became savvy with online tools such as GetProspect, SalesForce, Crunchbase for different applications. I vastly improved my content knowledge in the buildings and energy industries through weekly research, meetings with different ADL team members, and workshops.
I am thinking of continuing my education after college with interests in renewable energy, green technologies, sustainable business, and market based solutions. I am also considering working after college in those different fields. I am thinking of applying to ADL again as an associate after college too!
Bryce Hickam

Internship at Caltech’s Tech Transfer Office
PG&E Undergrounding, Trellisense spinout, and several other monetizing innovation projects for utility clients.
I enjoyed being able to get involved in a range of projects at varying stages of completion. I also really enjoyed being able to work with most everyone on the energy side of ADL and learning from each of their diverse backgrounds!
I particularly enjoyed diving into US and UK electric infrastructure and finding opportunities to bolster existing infrastructure for long-term stability.
I am finishing up my PhD in Physical Chemistry and then will pursue a career, most likely in consulting.
Isabelle Gorrivan

Previously I worked as a consultant for my college’s Sustainability Solutions Lab as well as with solar, architecture, and urban planning firms.
I worked on a data monetization project for a US utility and supported work on ABC Collaborative, Endurance (Monetizing innovation project), Clean transportation management for a US utility, NREL Perovskite, ProblemSpace open innovation challenge, and also have worked with startups supporting their growth through the ADL Scaffolding program.
Gaining exposure to the construction, energy, and transportation industries through my work on a variety of projects.
Some of the most valuable skills I learned from the internship were how to do research more effectively and how to synthesize large amounts of data for clients.

I have contributed to a variety of commercial and government projects involving project management, market analysis, and technical research. On the commercial side, I have supported energy startups, open innovation challenges, and Load Management projects. On the government side, I have worked on the SBIR, NREL prizes, and DOE OTT projects.
My favorite part of ADL has always been the close-knit community and having an opportunity to actively engage with and learn from a smaller, yet very diverse and knowledgeable team! I enjoyed working with the ADL team to support the climate tech sector while learning about many interesting topics.
I had no exposure to the energy industry before ADL, and I learned a lot about sustainable tech and the climate sector. Moreover, I gained many new project management skills alongside consulting.
I will be doing Tech Consulting full-time at PwC and seeking other opportunities to support the sustainability sector.

I worked as an engineer and deputy project manager at Draper Labs and on the investment team at Clean Energy Ventures.
The NREL perovskite solar cell projects and growth strategy project.
My favorite part of my internship was working alongside ADL team members to help start-ups in the climate tech sector grow and or mature their products.
I previously had limited knowledge of perovskites but quickly brought my self up to speed on the topic. I also became more knowledgeable on how venture studios function and key elements that make these entities successful.

I really enjoyed how hands on our responsibilities were as interns. We were able to take models, slides, and reports into our hands and really create things in our own direction, while still having a lot of support from the team. My favorite project was probably the monetizing innovation for one US utility, since there was a lot of exposure to unique ideas in the sustainability / cleantech space.
I felt like I learned a lot about research methods and how to tell a story with the different data sources we use. The guidance on slide creation and graphics was really helpful.

Before ADL, I interned at a data-driven news magazine named The Wire China and previously worked as a Yawkey Fellow at Raising A Reader Massachusetts, a nonprofit based in Boston.
I have helped out with a non-diesel alternatives project for PG&E, work with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and business development efforts at ADL
Having the opportunity to learn more about the energy transition and clean energy innovations with my everyday work has been a highlight. Gaining hands-on experience collaborating alongside supportive ADL colleagues and clients with deep expertise in energy has also been valuable.
I hope to find fulfilling opportunities that allow me to keep learning. While I don’t yet have one specific industry in mind, I’d be interested in continuing to pursue work that contributes to decarbonization and combating climate change.
Gib Versfeld
Clean Energy Intern
Prior to ADL, I was an analyst for a hedge fund in New York City, Navy Capital, where I developed bottom-up financial models. I have also served as a research assistant for one of my political science professors at Amherst, Eleonora Mattiacci. Our work focused on nuclear policy and rebel group social media campaigns.
I have worked on a project for a startup with advanced sensor technology and been assisting with business development across ADL.
I have been continually challenged and encouraged to think differently, which has been really enjoyable! My favorite part has been the level of ownership over the advanced radar project that I have held. It has been rewarding to have such an impact on each project. I can’t forget to mention that it has been extremely fun to work alongside a talented and supportive team.
I plan to continue working as a consultant, specifically involved in sustainability and socially driven initiatives. These two areas excite me and will drive future growth and advancements moving forward. My goal is to further my education to earn my MBA while developing more in-depth industry-specific knowledge. I am also really passionate about coaching lacrosse and would like to stay involved in underserved areas.

Gaining exposure to a wide variety of projects… each team member was eager to share their projects and experience with me which was extremely helpful as an undergraduate navigating career options!
While at ADL, I learned a lot about the construction industry which I had little exposure to before. I’ve always been interested in sustainability and clean energy, so learning about advanced construction opened my eyes to the importance of our built environment to the sustainability and climate change conversation since buildings account for about 40% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.
I am a full time student and doing research with my data analytics professor. We are collecting electric vehicle (EV) data from different organizations over time from different organizations to understand how forecasts change within and between organizations as well as over time.
